Brewing better coffee at home

A few basics that improve any home brew: fresh beans, clean equipment, the right grind and ratio.
You do not need special equipment to improve your coffee. Focus on these basics.
Start fresh: buy whole beans in small amounts and grind them just before brewing. Store beans in an airtight container away from light, heat and moisture.
Use good water: water makes up almost all of your cup, so use clean, good-tasting water.
Measure: a common starting point is about 60 grams of coffee for one litre of water, which is roughly one gram of coffee for every sixteen millilitres. Adjust to your taste, a little stronger or a little lighter.
Match the grind to the method: coarser for French press, medium for drip coffee, finer for espresso-style machines. If the cup tastes bitter, grind coarser; if it tastes sour or weak, grind finer.
Keep it clean: rinse and wash your equipment regularly, because old coffee oils make fresh coffee taste stale.
